TRAGEDY: Truck Runs Into Bystanders, Crushes Five To Death In Lagos

Tragedy struck in Lagos state on Tuesday after a truck ran into bystanders along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway of the state killing at least five people and injuring over seven others.

The petroleum truck driver who crushed the bystanders who were on the Oshodi Oke bridge to death while injuring over seven injured sustain different degrees of injuries sped off after the accident.

Rickey Wagoner, who was attacked by a gang of three youths as his bus broke down on the road on Monday February 24th 2014 in Ohio, USA, survived due to his genuine faith.

The man managed to snatch the gun from the young attackers and fired back, while they were running away.

Commenting on the case, Dayton police said it was too early in the investigation to draw any conclusions about the motive.

Meanwhile the Police Inspector, attached to the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos who narrowly escaped death with his wife were seated close to the restaurant when the accident occurred, confronted the naval officer attached to Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, with service number M4351 insisted he must pay for the damages he caused but the latter snubbed them, identifying himself as a naval personnel.

Airtel under threat of collapse

Separate affidavits filed by 16 commercial banks in Nigeria before a Lagos State High Court have revealed the bankrupt status of one of the nation’s leading telecoms firm, Airtel Nigeria Limited.

In the affidavits, copies of which were obtained by Daily Independent, the net sum of Airtel’s assets pale into insignificance in the face of the liabilities of the firm.

The total cash standing to the credit of the firm, according to the affidavits, was N131 million as at February 5, whereas the company was indebted to the tune of N51,176,406, 896.90.

According to the case, which brought about the revelation, Airtel had in 2003, terminated a contract earlier awarded to an indigenous Nigerian telecom service provider, Procomtel Limited.

Three injured as Taliban militants attack Afghan police hq

Three Taliban suicide bombers attacked a police headquarters in the eastern part of Kabul province early Friday, government said.

Sediq Sediqqi, Spokesman for Interior Ministry, said that at first, one of the attackers detonated his explosives-laden car at the gate of police compound in Saroubi district.

He said the two others, wearing women’s clothes, opened fire at the police on guard, adding that three policemen were injured in the attack in Saroubi district, some 40 kilometres east of the capital Kabul.

Sediqqi said all the attackers were gunned down by the police force.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, while Zabihullah Mujahid , the insurgents’ spokesman said several policemen were killed.

Barcelona in new tax case over Neymar

Barcelona is set to face a new case in Spain over alleged unpaid taxes in the transfer of Neymar from Santos last year,Goal.com reports.

A complaint by Barca socio Jordi Cases about the lack of transparency in the controversial deal led to an initial investigation into club president Sandro Rosell and saw the 49-year-old tender his resignation last month.

New president Josep Maria Bartomeu then presented documents at a news conference later that week that broke down the costs of the transfer.

Those revealed that Barcelona had in fact paid out €86.2m in the total cost of the operation, although the Catalan club insisted that the transfer itself remained at the oft-quoted figure of €57.1m.

It also emerged that the Blaugrana had paid €40m of that fee to the player’s parents, but did not detail monies for third-party investors, with supermarket chain DIS unhappy at being cut out of the deal.

Bartomeu has vowed to fight any charges, but the Barca president will now be hit by this new investigation, with the Spanish High Court requesting that Judge Pablo Ruz press charges against the Catalan club for alleged fiscal offenses between 2011 and 2013, relating to the signing of Neymar.

In a document submitted Wednesday, prosecutors claim Barca failed to pay a sum of €9.1m owed on a taxable payment of €37.9m.

Barca has yet to respond to the latest allegations.

BREAKING NEWS: Jonathan Suspends CBN Governor Sanusi, Appoints New Acting Governor

President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the immediate suspension of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from the office of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

He also ordered that Sanusi should hand over to the most senior Deputy Governor of the CBN, Dr Sarah Alade who will serve as Acting Governor until the conclusion of on-going investigations into breaches of enabling laws, due process and mandate of  the CBN.

Rueben Abati, the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity who announced this said investigations showed that Sanusi's tenure has been characterized by various acts of financial recklessness and misconduct which are inconsistent with the core values of CBN.

According to Abati, Jonathan was worried over the far-reaching irregularities under Sanusi's watch as CBN governor and had to order his immediate suspension.

The entire South Campus of the University of Education Winneba, Ghana, was thrown into a state of uproar as a level 100 student of the University was discovered dead in a nearby uncompleted building.

Identified as Solomon Obeng, the Basic Education student committed suicide by hanging himself in the uncompleted building on Vals Day after realizing he had obtained 3Es in his examination.

According to the University’s regulations, obtaining 3Es in an examination meant an outright dismissal after grades have been displayed on the school’s notice boards.

Some students who could not phantom why the deceased committed suicide considering the fact that ‘the results could be manipulated’ told 233 Live News the University management was to blame for the unfortunate happening.
